What’s good at the Wellington Chocolate Factory

words by niall roeder

Across all things, whether you’re talking about cars, threads or fish ‘n’ chips, there are different standards – a scale that runs from rubbish to sweet and up towards sweet as and choice. And just like you can have a run-of-the-mill piece of hoki or a superb piece of hoki, the same goes for chocolate.

Now, we’re not here to diss chocolate merchants, but we are here to shine a sweet spotlight on one of the champions in the game – the highly acclaimed Wellington Chocolate Factory.

The choc wizards at the WCF make organic, ethically traded, bean to bar chocolate. They’re all about the farm-to-table style process – they meet the farmers and source the best single-origin beans they can get their greedy mitts on. Then they use artisan methods dating back to the 18th century to roast, crack, winnow, conch and temper the beans to produce their powerful product.

They are known for their ingenious flavour combinations, New Zealand artist-designed wrappers and wicked barista skills. We look at what you should try when you go to the Wellington Chocolate Factory.

Chocolate (all of it)
This seems obvious but needs to reiterated. With the likes of Craft Beer Bar, house-blended cacao meets Nelson Sauvin hops and Gladfield toffee malt; The Great War Bar, coconut milk chocolate topped with Anzac crunch; and Cubana Chocolate & Coffee Bar, a blend of freshly roasted cacao and coffee beans from Cuba – their chocolate line-up is next level. And as mentioned, each wrapper is an individually designed piece of art by a local artist.

Banana Slab
This little morsel is like a Perky Nana on steroids. Dried All Good Bananas are combined with caramel, hazelnut, sesame seeds and chocolate ganache, and coated in liquid chocolate. If there was an award for Most Satisfying Bite, this would be a $1.40 favourite.

Hot Chocolate
Ever heard of the expression, “something to wash it down”? Well it applies to many a situation, and at the WCF, it refers to a hot chocolate. This is an outstanding hot choccy made by people who make outstanding chocolate – you don’t have to believe my recommendation, just listen to what I’m saying.

We reckon our new large size #hotchocolate will keep you warm (and happy) for longer????? #beantobar #ethicallymade #ethicallysourced #wellingtonchocolatefactory
