Vegan at Hippopotamus

words by niall roeder

The menu at QT Museum Wellington’s restaurant and cocktail bar, Hippopotamus, is peppered with a scrumptious mix of comfort food and fine dining, designed to satisfy everyone’s hunger. That goes for the carnivorous and the omnivorous. But what about the herbivorous – is there food for vegans in Wellington?

If you haven’t heard, vegans have feelings too. Who am I kidding, of course, you’ve heard! Proud vegans are the most vocal of all, rivalled only by cross fitters and evangelists. And that is okay.

Whether you agree or disagree with the philosophical side of veganism, the fact is that vegan food can be bloody delicious (no pun intended).

That’s why our French-inspired menu boasts a number of ethically sound and delicious dishes. Moral compasses are pointing towards these skilfully-made plant-plates and we’re not surprised.

Note – although no animals were harmed in the making of the following dishes, many living plants were brutally slaughtered.

Roasted Baby Root Vegetables In Hazelnut Oil, Mushroom Puree With “Soil, Rain & Snow”

Embracing the seasonal change – this is hearty, rustic vegan grub at its best. Couple the vegetarian meat (mushroom) and roasted root veggies with a nice drop of red and you’ll be cheering.

With kaffir lime going head to head with bruléed pineapple and coconut and mango pannacotta, this fresh dessert engages a mosaic of vibrant and wonderfully contrasting flavours.
