Your Guide to May

words by ben stephens

When planning a festival, you want to make sure you are that you have a wonderfully unique reason to celebrate. In the Month of May, this is the number one rule that needs to adhered – so you don’t clash with a competing festival.

Luckily for you, the punter, May plays home to a myriad of festivals, all vastly different to one another.

To help you out with where to go and when to be there, here is a little guide to Sydney Festivals in May:

Sydney Comedy Festival
Lets start with a little giggle, followed by a chuckle and then a deep, dirty belly laugh. Fresh from the Melbourne International Comedy, the SCF is here and already taking over the harbour city. With so much talent on show, maybe start with a Best of the Fest showcase at the Factory Theatre, running every night of the festival. Or check out some of the favourites like Daniel Sloss, Aaron Gocs, Fiona O’Loughlin, Dave Thornton, Dilruk Jayasinha; just to name a few. All tickets can be booked HERE

Head On Photo Festival
A picture is worth a thousand words and the Head On exhibition gives a stage to over 800 artists over 100 venues across Sydney. From Fine-Art, Photojournalism, Travel, Mobile to the classic art of portraits, the festival aims to highlight the best of the photography world. All submitted pieces are judged without the name of artist attached, giving each snap an equal chance of recognition. The festival takes over the whole of Sydney.

Vivid Sydney Festival
A full assault on all the senses. From Light, to Music and Ideas, Vivid has become a staple of the Sydney festival scene and brings the masses out to play in the cold winter nights. From the nightly lighting of the sails, to the treasure trove of installations throughout the city, Vivid knows how to wow a crowd. Then the music offering is ridic, read more about HERE. Then if you want to expand your mind and how to think, check out Oliver Stone in conversation at Sydney Town Hall. All the deets on Vivid HERE

Sydney Writers Festival
The lineup of speakers gets better with every incarnation. 2017 sees the writer behind the hilarious political comedy that is Veep, Mr Armando Iannucci take to the stage to talk all things satire. While the closing address will come from Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Susan Faludi, who will discuss taking refuge, in a book or for personal safety. Check out the full festival HERE

Semi- Permanent
SP17 has curated a design festival worth travelling for. Thankfully if you find yourself in Sydney in late March, you needn’t travel to far. Google, Vice, Nike, Sea Shepherd and NIDA are just a handful of those who will be taking to the stage to discuss innovation, design and business in the creative world. Tickets are a must and still available HERE

Sydney, it’s your month for a festival, we hope you enjoy!
