What’s good in Sydney’s Art World

words by ben stephens

With such a broad art scene, it can, at times, be rather tricky to keep ahead of the art game in Sydney. From those tiny galleries that are sprinkled through Darlinghurst and Potts Point to the exhibition halls of the Museum of Contemporary Art and the long, long corridors of Carraigeworks.

Let me give you a dash of direction of what’s exhibiting and where:

Sydney Art Month
It’s March, which means it’s Art Month. What this translates to, is March is packed with artsy goodies. From an architect walk through the Sirius Building to Art Nights at different galleries around the Sydney ‘hoods. There is so much going on, I highly recommend checking your availability against the official Art Month website.

Adman: Warhol Before Pop at The Art Gallery of New South Wales
Before Mr Warhola became the face of pop-art, he worked in the advertising industry, based the hustle and bustle of New York City. The exhibition looks at all the good work that the Adman did before he hit the big time – it creates a unique chance to check out where Warhol started.

Exit at UNSW Galleries
Ahh, so the world is heating up… That’s an actual fact. The concept of climate change refugees is very real and according to the boffins, over the next 50 years, there will be over one billion people displaced due to the impacts of a warming climate. Exit looks at the visual data of the consequences… showing a world losing land mass, with major migration. Quite the piece.

Primavera at 25 at the Museum of Contemporary Art
Young contemporary artists come together to show off their works every year at the annual Primavera exhibition. Primavera at 25 celebrates the work that has come from the last 25 years of the showcase. From little-known artists that have grown into huge names, this is a showing of some of the best art the country has to offer.

The Dark Matters at White Rabbit Gallery
The use of the colour black sometimes hides more than it shows. From the ancient use of soot and water to spray cans and printer cartridges, The Dark Matters showcases a range of Chinese artists playing with the darkest shade.

Superposition of Three Types at Artspace Woolloomooloo
In the need for a thrashing of colour? Superposition being the possibility of matter existing in all states simultaneously, while our basic attention span focuses on one. Conceptual, yet with 13 artists taking on the theory with a range of abstract outcomes, this exhibition is not to missed.

Lady Eats Apple at Carraigeworks
Set within a giant inflatable space, this performance piece plays with the idea of existence being infinite, yet personally only being given so little of it. With themes of death and fragility, Back to Back Theatre will hold your focus throughout.

Playgrounds in Paradise at Yellow House Gallery
Greg Nagel has been living the Tahitian lifestyle for some time now. This is his exhibition on daily life, using a classic collage feel to draw you closer to the characters within the photography. It’ll make you want to book a ticket, probably to Tahiti.
