Sometimes you just want to bang your drum on the off beat. Here are a few unconventional, bizarre and weird Sydney events for all the fabulous freaks out there.
Art Museum Party
They’re telling us to “expect the unexpected” when attending ARTBAR. And even though that sounds like a lamely overused phrase from the 90s, it’s bang-on in its message.
What we do know going into this adults-only creative free-for-all is that 18 artists take over the MCA, transforming the museum into a Frankensteinian exhibition of art, music, performance and whatever else they decide to transplant into the gallery.
Curated by artist and musician Tina Havelock Stevens, ARTBAR will feature a flowing bar, a heaving dance floor and the likes of DJ Gemma, Lisa Andrew, Frumpus and Charles Atlas. The details of how exactly they will be contributing is anyone’s guess.
It’ll get wacky, for sure.
When: 7-11pm on 27 April
Where: Museum of Contemporary Art
Hang out with dead people
If you’ve (weirdly) been yearning to see a display of 20 perfectly preserved human bodies and over 200 anatomical specimens, yearn no longer. Real Bodies The Exhibition is here.
This exhibition is utterly fascinating. Depending on the steeliness of your nerves, there’s a good chance Real Bodies will give you nightmares, but if you’re cool with seeing the preserved insides and outsides of ex-alive people, you’ll find it very informative.
When: 14 April – 14 October
Where: Byron Kennedy Hall, The Entertainment Quarter
Have a laugh
The line-up for Sydney Comedy Festival 2018 is bursting at the seams with out-there acts. From the ludicrous to the witty and downright offensive, you can get your freak on if you’ve got an open mind.
Whether it’s the orthodox Jew turned cynical atheist, Ari Shaffir and his dismemberment of life; superheroes defeating the evil Mr Cheesehead in Choo Choo Troupe Alicia Gonzalez and Debbie Zukerman; or Confetti Gun, the Sydney improv group that, due to financial restrictions, exchange diamonds for glitter and Passion Pop for Champagne, you’re going to be in for a good show. A weird, freaky, but good show.
When: 23 April – 20 May
Where: Various venues around Sydney
