We must say, the weather is absolutely amazing in Sydney at the moment. The skies are clear, the air is the perfect temperature – not too hot, not too cold, and finally, the humidity is easing!
That being said, we know the chillier climes are coming and it’s nice to be prepared with some spots to feast on hearty meals that will warm you to the core. And put you in the best kind of food coma!
The classic (or not so classic Sunday roast, in some cases) is something that most non-vegos just can’t say no to.
The great thing is that many places are also doing vegetarian roast options these days because, if you think of it, the vegies are a major part of the roasty heaven on a Sunday.
It’s pure comfort food, while also giving lots of us nostalgic feelings of our childhood. Grandparents, parents, siblings fighting over who could have the crackling or who took too many potatoes or gravy – fun times! Delicious times.
Let’s break it down into something for everyone. Some of us like:
Less fancy
Dove & Olive
If you have never been to the Dove & Olive, it a scramble of many great things. You’ve got spots to park your bum in every corner, and they are all different. There are a zillion drinks to pick from as well. The Sunday roast is no exception – they change it often and mix up flavour and meat choices. The portion size is generous and the price is also generously reasonable.
Where: 156 Devonshire St, Surry Hills
More fancy
Hotel Centennial
It’s worth visiting the Centennial, even just for a drink because it’s an ultra lovely space. It’s fancy, but not too fancy. Still very accessible to all. The Sunday roast comes in at a heftier price than others, but the wine list, ambience, staff and service make it well worth splurging a wee bit.
Where: Corner of Victoria Ave and Oxford St, Woollahra
Cosy
The Lord Dudley
Picture a traditional English pub, and you’ve pictured The Lord Dudley to a tee. It’s dark and moody in the best way in the bar and then you head down to the sandstone-lined restaurant. And there’s a fire. Plus, you have pretty much every type of seat to choose from – couches, bar stools, ottomans, chairs … It’s pretty much one of the best spots to treat yourself to a seriously tasty, cosy, wintery Sunday roast.
Where: 236 Jersey Road, Woollahra
Outdoors
Woolwich Pier Hotel
Head to a slightly different part of town and you will definitely not have wasted your time. This lovely space by the water in Woolwich offers many options for roasts, beverages and everything in general. The sides are seriously serious with pretty much every trimming you could ever ask for or think of. It’s a big place but get in early so you can snag a spot outside.
Where: 2 Gale St, Woolwich
Busy
The Taphouse
They say location is key and the Local has this. But, it also has some major food yums. The roast is extremely popular so make sure to land a seat early or you’ll be standing. Lunch or dinner, make a reservation so you don’t have to fret. The space is great, and will be pumping – there are three levels including a rooftop so spread out and explore. There a high chance you could run into someone you know … just a heads up.
Where: 122 Flinders St, Darlinghurst
Comfortable
The Duck Inn
The Duck Inn is tucked in the square between Cleveland Street, Broadway and City Road. What, you say? There’s somewhere worth going there? Yes. The Inn is a lovely escape from all the hectic inner city buzz. It’s cool, but not too cool. It’s light, bright, fun and friendly. The roasts are delicious, well cooked and huge. You can’t go wrong here (especially as its available for both lunch and dinner!)
Where: 74 Rose St, Chippendale
Another factor in the Sunday haunt of choice is often the capacity to stretch out the eating to a Sunday social and sip session. So, these are our top picks for Sunday roasts with a great optional afternoon drinking opportunity:
The Tilbury Hotel – 12-18 Nicholson St, Wooloomooloo
The Newport – 2 Kalinya St, Newport
Watson’s Bay Boutique Hotel – 1 Military Rd, Watsons Bay
Four in Hand – 105 Sutherland St, Paddington
