Sydney Exhibitions You Should See Right Now

Nov 17, 2017  ·  2 min read

There’s a bucket-load of art exhibitions through Sydney at the moment. From the erotic fetishism of iconic photographers to vivid, transcendental video installations at the MCA, Sydney is the place to be right now for any avid art lover. Here are the Sydney exhibitions you should see right now.

Through the eyes of an icon

The works of Robert Mapplethorpe, one of the most iconic and respected photographers of the 20th century, are on show at the Art Gallery of New South Wales until March 2018. A survey of more than 200 of Robert’s works, spanning 20 years, explore the notions of eroticism, fetishism and pop-culture idols of the likes of Patti Smith, Isabella Rossellini and Debbie Harry.

Fluid florals

View the stunning oil paintings of Canadian artist Stephanie Têtu this month at Piermarq Gallery in Paddington. Stephanie’s delicate and feminine flower motifs emanate a powerful sensuality that have been inspired by her experience in the fashion industry, drawing on the fluid motions of a model on the runway. On now until November 25th.

Mind-blowing visuals

The Museum of Contemporary Art this just last week unveiled its stellar summer blockbuster, ‘Sip My Ocean’ by Pipilotti Rist. A stunning incorporation of video and sculpture that urges visitors to dive into colourful projections, and explore the relationship between nature, the body and technology. Gallery-goers will be immersed in Rist’s ground-breaking practice. One she has been cultivating since the 1980s. On now until February 2018.

All for one and one for all

A topical exhibition at Verge Gallery that touches on the marriage equality postal service, ‘To the Inclusion of all Others’ invites artists to consider queer community beyond traditional rituals and behaviours, sparking conversation about sexuality, gender, local history and social commentary. Alongside the exhibition will be an array of public programs, including an open mic night and community care picnic that will incite further opportunity to delve into the nuanced conversation around queer and trans bodies in the wake of political attack.
