Sydney Architecture Festival 2017

Back in 2013 the population of the Sydney Australia was 4.76m. At last count it was 5.25m. Just think about that for a moment. If Sally had 4.76m sheep in 2013 and things were all dandy, today she has almost another million sheep to look after.

Crazy when you break it down to a sheep analogy huh?

Leave the sheep in the pen, we’re here to talk about the Sydney Architecture Festival that is about to sweep Sydney over the upcoming long weekend.

The reason to open with the facts and figures of the nation’s fastest-growing city is to showcase the idea of population growth and how the architecture we live in adapts. Handy, because this is also the focus of the 11th edition of the #archifest. Alongside this, the ideas of our changing homes and how we live the festival will be looking at what we’re losing as we face a brave new world when it comes to architecture.

This year, a first for the program, the festival will be taking the Hub to the Western Sydney University, the home of the first stage of Australia’s largest urban renewal project, 1PSQ.

There is something afoot with this year’s program, something different, something truly exciting. Here are just some of the events taking place over the four days:

Sydney, You’re Brutal Talk & Tour: The New World

It’s hard to escape the love affair that Sydney seems to have with concrete characters. The more brutal, the better, at times. This series will firstly discuss the feelings that city seems to have towards the material and then the tours will take attendees all over the city, pointing out all the brutalist creations from Parramatta to Millers Point.

Meet the Aussie Mosque Talk & Tour

Two-thirds of the mosques that call NSW home are found in Western Sydney – no real surprise as the diversification of culture is at new levels in the west. Though have the Australian Mosques taken on their own style and unique vibe and can these designs bridge communities in multi-cultural Sydney?

Digital Placemaking and Platform Urbanism Talk

How will it all look? The future is well and truly here, but do we have any idea what it looks like? Indy Johar, Hank Hausler and Sarah Barns, along with MC Tim Horton will look at unpacking what the future of architecture will look like for Sydney

You’ll need to snap your tickets up for the festival ASAP as they tend to sell out rather quickly.
