Project 5 Volume 8

Sep 23, 2016  ·  3 min read

By Josh Ives.

Living in Sydney these last six years has assured me of a few things:

1). I never have to walk more than a block to find a decent double shot latte;

2). Cab drivers are pretty much insane;

3). The small bar scene is pretty darn rad; and finally

4). SYDNEY FREAKIN’ LOVES ITS STREET ART

Graffiti Art has always had its place in Sydney’s culture. Bold statements, expression of sexuality, political ideas and homages adorn street walls, buildings and laneways; constantly reminding us of how lucky we are to live in such an awesome city. From the Sydney Uni Graffiti Tunnel – which is basically akin to being slapped across the face by art – to the famous Bondi Sea Wall, highlighting the true blue Aussie surf and skate culture by seamlessly fusing old and new school designs.

Forget art galleries…the best stuff is sprawled across our own little concrete playground! So, in the spirit of our street art culture, it seems fitting to rave about one of the hottest outdoor art exhibitions of the year – Project 5 Volume 8.

Consisting of four distinct components (a public art exhibition, live events, workshops and a charity auction), Volume 8 showcases the talents of a handpicked bunch of the edgiest artists in Sydney during a month-long paint-fest!

So what sort of artsy-madness can one expect you ask? Simple. Four legendary artists (Brett Chan, Georgia Hill, Kaff-eine & Mik Shida). Four enormous cubes and a boatload of paint. So pack a lunch, head over to the Darling Quarter’s busy Civic Connector, sit back, and enjoy the process of a masterpiece take shape, from a blank canvas to stunning finale. Make sure to set Friday 30th September in your calendar as that signifies the official launch party from 6-9pm.

To top it off, there’s nothing like a good charitable event to warm the cockles of your heart, right?! At the succession of the 3-day gruelling paint-a-thon, the four final works will be auctioned off at a special event, with all of the proceeds going towards the Monkey Baa Theatre Co., a not-for-profit theatre organization with the aim of keeping the art of theatre alive in the hearts of our little Aussie rug-rats… #Sold

If that’s not enough, over the remainder of the month, the event will run a series of workshops with a host of urban artists giving guidance to kids interested in learning the arts and crafts and nurturing upcoming talent.

So what are you waiting for? Grab some mates and watch the four artists go head to head to the sound of some bangin’ tunes and an open-air harbour view.

The event wis being hosted by our good friends at aMBUSH Gallery, for more information, check them out HERE.

Projest 5 Volume 8 Exhibition is on at Darling Quarter from September 30 to October 30.
