A Must See Guide to Sydney Writers Festival

words by ben stephens

With Sydney Writers Festival about to take over the harbour municipal, we want to highlight a number of the speakers, panels and conversations that will be taking place during the festival.

There is something like 300+ events happening the festival; so a little highlight reel should come in, real handy.

Before we get into what not miss, a word from the Artistic Director, Michaela McGuire, on why books are more important than ever:

‘In times like these, we have a choice. We can give in to the rising zeitgeist of insular thought and intellectual suspicion or we can look for ways to fight it. Specifically, in this Festival, we look to books, to literature, to new forms of writing, where some of the world’s finest minds have started circling the wagons. Now, more than ever, I think that readers will be turning to literature as a place of refuge.’

Now that your understanding of why we need to place emphasis on the consumption of books, words and ideas are founded, here are four must-see events this Sydney Writers Festival:

Elaine Welteroth: On Editing Teen Vouge
Since becoming the Editor in Chief of Teen Vouge, almost a year ago, Elaine Welteroth has increased the magazine’s coverage of issues that matter. Publishing a range of feminist, political and social justice matters while still mixing with fashion and style news, Elaine has thrusted readers to look beyond what they are used to. Julia Turner, Editor in Chief at Slate will join Elaine on stage to discuss editing in 2017.
