Now that we’ve finally recovered from the abundance of amazing things to do and see during Sydney Festival, it’s time to go and see the breathtaking installation, The Horse Trotted Another Couple of Metres, Then It Stopped, by German artist Katharina Grosse. She’s spoiling us with an extended exhibition while the rest have packed up shop. Thank you, Katharina!
If you haven’t already seen this during the festival, which wrapped up on the 28th of January, now is your chance to see it sans the hordes of people. There’ll obviously still be crowds but it could be a more meditative experience at this stage in the game.
About the work
This work was specifically commissioned to be placed in the Carriageworks space, making this the world premiere. This particular piece is comprised of more than 8000 square metres of suspended fabric. Using a spray gun, Grosse has created a multilayered painting on the surfaces and folds of the fabric, resulting in a “sublime and otherworldly environment”.
At Carriageworks, Katharina has made a point of challenging the conventions of painting. She has said that she is compelled by the possibilities that painting holds, the space it can occupy in our lives, and the many ways in which it lives in the world.
About the artist
Born in Freiburg and based in Berlin, Katharina is known for her immersive and colourful pieces; she often paints directly onto architecture and landscapes and then incorporates lengths of fabric and numerous other materials to create the desired effect that ultimately builds the end product.
For Grosse, painting is an experience in subjectivity. Working with a spray gun, she implements multi-dimensional visual effects over surfaces and textures to create her works.
The experience of this artwork is so unique and just plain beautiful. Adults and children alike are being wowed by the colours and sheer size and effort that makes the installation. It’s one not to be missed!
When: Daily until 8 April, 10am – 6pm
Where: Carriageworks, 245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh (corner Codrington Street)
