By Ben Stephens.
When it comes to living legends in today’s world, who do you think of? For me, there are too many to poke a stick at – I reckon we have some pretty kick-ass people knocking about. When you narrow the field and pull focus on the comedy scene, the stick becomes relatively bigger, which in turn makes it easier to be poking it around. We are in the midst of a golden era of comedy with the likes of Joey Diaz, Kevin Hart, Louis C.K. and Bill Burr at the top of their game and the older stalwarts like Billy Connolly, Michael Palin and Jennifer Saunders still kicking.
Now it’s hard to place a crown on the King or Queen of anyone in the industry of making people giggle, which is fine, different strokes for different folks etc. So without saying ‘HE IS THE KING OF COMEDY’, I’ll just word it as, John Cleese is coming to Sydney, for a conversation with James Valentine at the Sydney Opera House. There I did it, without saying that John Cleese is (debatably) the King of comedy.
John Cleese probably doesn’t need too much introduction, though to recap his career highlights, let me indulge you just a tad. Days before finishing his Law Degree at Cambridge University, two BBC executives proposed that Cleese comes on board to write comedy for radio, from here Monty Python, Faulty Towers and a number of best selling books would be born into the world. This formed the backbone of skit comedy and personally cemented a love for the hustle and bustle of country hotels for me. On top of this, all of this comedy gold, Cleese has a species of Lemurs named after him, Avahi cleesei, they can be found in Eastern Madagascar.
John Cleese In Conversation is an opportunity to listen to the great man discuss his life, work and philosophies on both as he no doubts smacks a giggle of the audience. A Sydney Opera House insider has said the tickets are selling fast and will sell out, so head over the SOH website HERE to snatch them up.
John Cleese In Conversation is at the Sydney Opera House August 15, 2016.
