Heaps Gay Street Party

words by O.K. Glynn

It’s 2017 and things are changing and evolving all the time – if we look back over the last 100 years we have seen progress in terms of equality trickling through to make a more positive state of affairs for every human that identifies as anything other than what is to be “expected”.

It’s slow progress, but it’s progress all the same, and all the time we see little pockets of support blossoming up from the undergrowth, and one of those is Heaps Gay – the LGBTIQ+ movement that saw a website spring up and create a safe-haven for Queer people to share their stories, their news and organise their incredible events where there was nothing but positivity to be found.

Three years on, Heaps Gay has become a massive phenomenon, not only fenced around the LGBTIQ+ community, but inclusive of everyone that just wants to come in and have a fucking good time.

When you live in Australia and it’s summer time, there is nothing better than a raging street party to really take advantage of the fact that we have some of the best weather in the world.

Heaps Gay are taking the bull by the horns and have organised a massive event for this Saturday Feb 11th (and we are gearing up for a scorchingly hot weekend).

It’s a street festival-of-sorts in conjunction with Southern Comfort and FBi RADIO and is supported by the Inner-West Council, so you know it’s going to have the haphazard exuberance of a spontaneous street-party; but you can rest assured that you aren’t going to get chased down the street by angry residents when you’re trying to dance with a stop sign.

The party kicks off at 1pm and will see a huge chunk of Garden Street in Marrickville shut down to play host to a sweet live music line up (curated by the folks at Redbull Sound Select) with the likes of: NGAIIRE, NO ZU, Broadway Sounds, Fascinator, Lauren Gaffiero, Ariane, Chanel, Tyson Koh, Charlie Villas, Hip Hop Hoe, and Jack Shit.

This event is a strictly legends-only, so if you’re a bit of an asshole, don’t bother attending. There will be live music, street performance, rainbows, glitter, probably a few unicorn onesies – who knows, anything goes.

Gearing up for the weekend like ⚡️⚡️

Heaps Gay are renowned for innovative and inclusive parties that celebrate being exactly who and what you are, no questions asked.

Jump on a train or a bus or a plane and kick your ass off the curb into this rad little summer bender, the days are getting shorter so you have to squeeze every last drop of summer from the remaining days.
