Design in Sydney & Where to Find it

Good design stands the test of time. Whether it’s fashion, architecture or furniture, if you’re enamoured by jaw-dropping shapes, lines, colours and textures, you’ll be excited by some of the sumptuous design this city has to offer.

We’ve handpicked some of our favourite hot spots for design lovers, from the old to the new; the iconic to the avant-garde.

Sydney Opera House
The most iconic building in the nation is an obvious but unforgettable one – the Sydney Opera House, constantly lauded as one of the world’s greatest architectural feats. Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the inspiration behind the modern expressionist structure was sails on the harbour, bird wings, the shape and form of clouds and shells.

Acne Studios
Fashion-focussed design lovers rejoice – there’s a brand-new city-based Acne Studios in King Street, showcasing a huge collection of the brand’s signature minimalist apparel. The King Street store will stock the label’s latest releases with some additional seasonal items thrown in.

The Moderns: European Designers in Sydney
Exhibiting now at the Sydney Museum until November 26, The Moderns: European Designers in Sydney is a showcase of forgotten aspects of Australian modernism. This object-rich exhibition takes viewers on a journey through Sydney’s émigré architects, interior designers and furniture makers working in the 1930s to 1960s and their impact on the development of modernist design in Sydney.

Books Kinokuniya
You might wonder why we have included a bookshop in this round-up, but this is a pretty unique city hub, where design lovers can trawl through more than 30,0000 (yes, you read that right) titles in a myriad of languages. Within their walls you will find a stockpile of books on all forms of design including fashion, art, architecture, and so much more.

Art Deco pubs
In some Sydney pubs, you can sip ciders and admire your surroundings simultaneously – we’ll drink to that! Sydney is aching with an array of art deco buildings, many of which have been transformed into state-of-the-art watering holes. Our top picks are the Old Clare Hotel in Chippendale, the Unicorn Hotel in Paddington and the Albury Hotel in Darlinghurst.
