Sydney Bingefest 2017

Dec 1, 2016  ·  4 min read

words by josh ives

Bingefest. Two little words that come mid-December are going to cause mass hysteria among gamers, film lovers and just pure procrastinators alike.

Just to cut to the chase, Bingefest is simply 24 hours of non-stop content. That’s right, it’s an event organised for the sole purpose of bludging around watching TV, movies and playing games. There are even a few dance lessons thrown in for good measure.

And since this is a hype article designed to get you jacked up for the possibility of chilling out for an entire day with no nagging, I thought I’d focus on a few of the events that I think you’ll go ape for. Sit back and pre-heat the popcorn, you’re gonna need it.

Buffy Binge-A-Thon:

YAS. Are you ready to kick it old-school and prepare yourself for 144 delicious episodes of Sarah Michelle Gellar in her defining role? I sure am. Take yourselves back to the 90s – a time where Vampires weren’t weird diamond-skinned introverts that fight with jacked-up werewolf man-childs. They were actually pretty bad-ass and were taken down with a swift roundhouse kick to the face! Whether you’re a Watcher or a Scooby member, get ready for the graveyard shift with Buffy. Pro-tip: Stock the up on supplies.

24-hr Streetfighter:

Prepare to discover this little gem in the wonderland that is Bingefest. But beware, set an alarm to get here because I can foresee many a testosterone-filled young man racing to show off his skillz against the world. Or not. I’ve read quite a few articles on Granny’s who say screw you to retirement villages and just go online 24/7 to pwn n00bs in World of Warcraft. Yeah, don’t mess with Granny. She may be old, but she’s got experience and shes’s got bags of time to hone her game. So if you’re serious about taking out the heavyweight championship, you better jack yourself in and get ready to punch, kick, flip and tackle until your thumbs need medical attention. Finish him!

Labeouf, Ronkko & Turner:

Shia Labeouf is an interesting guy. A Hollywood star since boyhood, this guy has never ceased to amaze us in his time in the spotlight. From his devilishly innocent role in Even Stevens, he turned many a female head in his breakout role in Transformers. From there, he kinda fell off the radar for a while, intermittently returning to grittier roles in films such as Fury. From dancing with a little girl in a Sia video, too confusing us with the hilariously awkward ‘DO IT’ campaign, you never know quite what he’ll do next. Which makes this appearance so much fun! Over two consecutive nights, Labeouf, Ronkko and Turner will return to collaborate on a project shrouded in mystery. I honestly can’t tell you what they have planned, but I have no doubt that it’ll leave you talking about it for days.

Harambe Memorial Service:

Since the unfortunate death of Cincinnati Zoo’s resident silverback gorilla, Harambe, the internet has sort of lost its mind. From the passionate to the absolutely absurd, people all over the world are paying their respects for the mighty fallen mammal and demanding retribution for the incident. Don’t get me started on the memes. So what can you expect here? Featuring Instagrammer Celeste Barber, The Backburners’ James Colley, Superwog and a host of other internet stars, Australia’s best, brightest and funniest gather to tell the definitive tale of what actually happened on the Internet this year. From the death of the most famous gorilla since King Kong, to Joe Biden memes, get ready to suspend disbelief at what some people dream up and share on the world wide web.

Once again. Let the binge begin people. Grab your tickets HERE
