Queenstown in Autumn

Mar 7, 2018  ·  2 min read

Queenstown’s autumn is a proper autumn. And what does that mean, exactly? Above all, the rich greenery that lines the lakes, roads and trails stunningly turns every colour of the autumnal rainbow.

Besides the foliage altering its colour like a chameleon, the air is refreshingly crisp (temps between 5°C and 25°C) which means sweatless wandering and afternoon scarves. Hot meals once again take on a new meaning and red wine nightcaps are back in full force.

We look at Queenstown’s autumn and what you can do before the snow season starts.

Go walkabout

Queenstown’s surrounds are remarkably diverse and, as autumn brings a storm of new colour, the opportunities for epic photos ploughs into fresh territory. There are countless strolls, walks and hikes in and around Queenstown to choose from, of which the usual greens are beautifully stained with spectacular reds, browns and golds.

Go wining

When isn’t it a good time to hit wineries, really? There isn’t one. But in autumn, the gorgeousness of the scenery is amplified and the temperature is just right for wine drinking.

Have a look at Brennan Wines, Wet Jack Winery, Mt Rosa Wines, Peregrin Wines Chard Farm Winery and Gibbston Valley Wines … or find somwhere else that takes your fancy.

The Queenstown Trail

This mega track is made up of 110km of trails that snake between rivers, lakes, forests and mountains in the Wakatipu basin. Grab a pushbike and make your way past Queenstown Bay, Frankton, Lake Hayes, Arrowtown, Gibbston’s ‘Valley of Vines’ and loads of breathtaking vantage points.

Glenorchy

Glenorchy is a quaint settlement town nestled in the northern end of Lake Wakatipu. And if you thought it couldn’t get quainter, wait until you see it in between March and May. The 45-minute drive from Queenstown is a pleasure, especially at this time of year.

Arrowtown

A picturesque town known for its autumn festival and hearty eats, Arrowtown is another charming little spot that turns up the charisma during the autumn months.
