Sunrise Yoga at the Opera House
Opera House yoga and a shimmering harbour sunrise, what better way to start the day?
Ommm my god … Opera House yoga is locusting its way back into our Jivamukti’s. And this time there’ll be stretchy activewear and core-engaged circuit classes too. In the wise words of Olivia Newton-John, “Let’s get physical, let me hear your body talk”.
After the success of the inaugural stint in 2016, the Sunrise On The Steps series is returning to see out summer in a fit of sweaty glory. The stretch of Opera House yoga and circuit classes start mid-March and will run every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for ten weeks.
Exercising first thing in the morning is the way to go and, if it’s not yet part of your routine, this is probably the best way to start. Apparently, a boosted metabolism, better sleep, a healthier approach to food, improved mood and an epic feeling of accomplishment are just some of the benefits of morning workouts, so imagine reaping those rewards under the iconic sails as the sun rises and the harbour gleams.
Opera House Yoga
Salute the sun overlooking Sydney Harbour with Crawf Weir (of Barefoot Yoga Studio) and his unique blend of strength and softness classes each Wednesday and Friday. These classes are accessible for beginners and challenging for the more hardened yogis.
Opera House Circuit
Combine strength and cardio in an overall body workout with Adam Trama (Physical Training Instructor for the Australian Army) and Janis Blums (Firefighter and SHIFT PT Academy graduate) each Tuesday and Thursday. This is suitable for all fitness levels.
Scrub Up Before Opera House Yoga
We’re not all rubber yogis with Ravi Shankar techno chakras. If you fall into the flexibility kook group you can develop your rookie skills with the help of free YouTube channels. There are plenty to choose from, however, the instructional videos on Yoga Journal, PsycheTruth and Yoga with Adriene are a solid place to begin learning about yoga and practicing the fundamental poses.
For those looking to learn some basic movements prior to slogging it out in the circuit classes, beginner’s body weight workouts are the way to go.
Sunrise on the Steps will be running Tuesday-Friday from 13-18 March at 7am. Tickets are $25 and are available on the website.
