All You Need to Know for ANZAC Day 2018

ANZAC Day – dawn services, morning marches, lunchtime two-up and arvo footy.

The 25th of April, the national day to commemorate all Australian and New Zealand service men and women past and present, is just around the corner. It’s the time to pay our respects as well as enjoy some cheeky Aussie pastimes. From the dawn services to the city march, two-up and afternoon footy, this is what you need to know about ANZAC Day if you’re in Sydney or Bondi.

Dawn service

Rub the eyes, pin a sprig of rosemary to your lapel and start your day by paying respects at one of the many dawn services around town.

Sydney CBD – One of Sydney’s most prestigious dawn services is held at Martin Place, which begins at 4.30am and is attended by thousands.

Bondi – If you’re beachside, the North Bondi RSL is the place to be. Just metres from the sand, last year’s ceremony attracted over 20,000 people.

ANZAC Day March

Join the sea of wavers, young and old, paying tribute to thousands of veterans and their descendants, as well as current service men and women as they proudly march through the city.

In 2018, for the first time in the ANZAC Day March’s 102-year history, Australia’s servicewomen will be leading the procession.

Start: 9am – Martin Place and Elizabeth Street

Finish: 12.30pm – ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park

The ANZAC spirit is one of resilience, mateship and larrikinism. The latter being evident in how popular the usually illegal gambling game of two-up was with Australia’s soldiers during World War I. The authorities turned a blind eye to it then, and for one day a year, they turn a blind eye to it now. And it’s a good thing they do because Aussies still love the flippin’ game.

Just about every pub in town plays two-up on ANZAC Day, but there are a few standout pubs that get the vibe just right.

Two-up in Sydney – The Australian Heritage Hotel,  The Dolphin, Glenmore Hotel, The Woollahra Hotel, Courthouse Hotel, Royal Hotel, Watson’s Bay Hotel, The Argyle.

Two-up in Bondi – Bondi Beach Public Bar, The Bucket List, Beach Road Hotel, North Bondi RSL.

Anzac Day Cup

If you want to really squeeze the most out of your ANZAC Day, the ANZAC Day Cup could be for you. The fiery rugby league match between the Sydney Roosters and the St George Illawarra Dragons was introduced in 2002 to honour the ANZACs and makes for a great escape from two-up if the piggy bank is getting thin.

When: 4.10pm at Allianz Stadium
