Melbourne’s Gin Hideouts

words by ben stephens

Ahh Gin.

You beautiful distillation of grain mash, mixed with a wide variety of botanicals like juniper berries, giving you that distinct flavour palette that we love you so much for. Back in the 17th century, Gin was sold at pharmacies to treat kidney and stomach aliments. This just confirms that a little Gin every now and then can’t be a bad thing.

When you mix your love for Gin and with the strong feelings you have for the Melbourne CBD bar scene, you get what many would call, a match made in heaven.

Here are some sweet spots around the city that we recommend ordering your next Gin concoction at:

Gin Palace
It’s an obvious place to start, given the name and all. It’s with that in mind that here deserves a classic. Make it a Gin martini at the bar and then fin a spot to lounge in. These guys are just a hop and a skip from our front doors of QT Melbourne.

Section 8
It’s a laneway bar and they serve gin. That’s two from two in the first sentence; you know you’re in the right spot. But seriously, if you’re new to Melbourne or just visiting, Section 8 is the place to grab with a drink. Watch the Melbourne you have heard so much about, unfold before your very eyes. Not a typical Gin connoisseur courtyard, but check out the Gin’s on offer and you’ll be surprised. Could I be so brash and recommend that you enjoy a nip of Gin, neat, with a beer chaser?

1806
If it’s your first time finding 1806, be sure you know exacting where you’re heading or you’ll never find it. This basement, prohibition vibe’d bar know their way around a couple of tasty Gin cocktails that I think you might enjoy. Take for example the Two Rings made with the finest Bombay offerings.

Rooftop at QT
Sweet vibes, rad staff and view that captures the Melbourne lifestyle, what more could you ask for? How about a Gin & Tonic classic? See the team at the bar on your way in and then make tracks to the balcony to pick out your perch for the late afternoon/evening. With a selection of Gins that won’t leave you thirsty, you’ll be find your home on the rooftop with us.

Melbourne might be full of the best darn beers on the market and stock a huge list of local, imported and natural wines, but it’s gin-uinely a Gin town.
