Splendour in the Grass 2016

By Niall Roeder.

Once again, arguably Australia’s premier festival produced a mega lineup, and then it sold out. Or did it? Technically it did, but there are some tickets to be snatched up on the Moshtix resale facility. This is the only way you can legitimately get your mits on one if you haven’t already. So, if you can actually go, please do so for all of us who are stuck in the grind and are too afraid to stick it to the man. Just think, you could be the 2016 version of that muddy naked guy (Google it).

If you do decide to go or if you’re lucky enough to already be going, who should you see? It’s hard and not because of the lack of talent. Quite the opposite. The festival posters are crammed with a sh*t tonne of epic artists. With the likes of The Strokes, The Cure, Flume, The Avalanches, Hermitude, Sigur Ros, Santigold, Matt Corby, Sticky Fingers, Courtney Barnett, Jake Bugg and Crystal Fighters gracing the lineup, it makes for damn fine viewing.

The Avalanches

It’s simple. If you’ve got the chance to see the Avalanches, you take it. In 2000 these kids produced what is considered to be one of the best Aussie albums of all time. And after a massive hiatus, they’re back. Aussies had been waiting for the Avalanches next album like the world had been waiting for Dr Dre’s. The difference is that Compton sucked and Wildflower is pleasant to the ear and, mark my words, will be more and more appreciated as time goes on. Plunderphonics at it’s best.

Listen for Since I Left You, Frontier Psychiatrist and Run DNA.

At The Drive-In

These Texans were leading the post-hardcore charge through the 90s. They disbanded in 2001 and went on to make Sparta and The Mars Volta, two epic bands in their own right. But much to many a millennial’s joy, they reunited in 2009. Expect these guys to go absolutely mental… just pray Cedric’s voice holds out.

Listen for Arc Arsenal, Napoleon Solo, Rascuache and Cosmonaut.

The Internet

The Internet is sexy AF. This is neo-soul, but not like that of the Roots. It’s alternative rhythm and blues and hip and hop. Syd tha Kyd (of Odd Future) fronts the six-piece with a certain charisma that makes you wish you were pals with her.

Listen for Girl and Special Affair.

James Blake

Blake is a Grammy and Brit award nominee… just give him one, would ya? The kid has keyboard cases of talent. He owns the experimental electronic soul rhythm genre. Get arm in arm with your best mates, try keep a straight face, watch Blake do his thing and every now and then whisper to your crew that you love them.

Listen for Retrograde, Timeless and CMYK.
