Sign of the Times

hero image by blek le rat’s stencilled self-portrait: The man who walks through walls

words by ben stephens

“The thing I hate the most about advertising is that it attracts all the bright, creative and ambitious young people, leaving us mainly with the slow and self-obsessed to become our artists. Modern art is a disaster area. Never in the field of human history has so much been used by so many to say so little.”
― Banksy

It’s late at night, headlights from the occasional car passing by gives that little rush of adrenaline and heightens the anxiety of being caught. As you scale the building, the group of artists are all feeling the same pulse of excitement. Then, the stencil is laid flat, the glue is applied or the paint is sprayed.

What this creates is a piece of art that in today’s world holds something more cultural than that of a gallery exhibition, to some degree. Depending on the artist, the message of the art and the position of the poignant piece, you might just see it all over the world, recreated for different reasons.

Ahh, the magic that is street art. Sure the above is a waffly piece of prose that only really lends itself to the top notch street artists of the contemporary world, for example, the Banksy’s or the Lister’s. Both are fine examples of artists who produce work that makes you stop for second and check your bias to the subject being challanged before you. Amongst these creatives, there is a sub-culture that just generally deface public property and give the art an absolute rubbish name.

So it’s with giddy excitement to let you in on the Gold Coast City Gallery’s latest exhibition kicking off this week, Signs of the Time. The showcase will be highlighting the work of Blek Le Rat , Banksy, Swoon, Bambi, E.L.K, Lister, Stewy, D*face and A1One. The collection is all thanks to the local collector Ken McGregor, who has amazing taste. Clearly.

Get down there to check out an exhibition that is covered from head to toe in rad pieces of street art that make you feel something. Get amongst it ?

Sign of the Times runs from January 18 to April 9 and is completely free. More info HERE.
