Sand Safari Arts Festival 2017

words by kobi facto

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the Gold Coast is now set to come alive with Mermaids and Mythical creatures for the 2017 Sand Safari Arts Festival from February 10 to 26.

And if you think YOU can make a mean sandcastle – you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

The golden shores of Surfers Paradise will become centre stage for the celebration of sand and sea-inspired art, drawing thousands of bemused onlookers to marvel at the intricately carved life-sized masterpieces made entirely of sand – 10 tonnes of it to be precise!

The Sand Safari kicks off with the annual Sand Trail. Explore the sandy sculptures with your squad by downloading a Sand Trail map. X marks the spot as sand art pops-up in hotel lobbies, shopping centres, libraries and restaurants (for a timely pit stop).

But it’s not just the sand varietal of sculptures on display either.

UK’s renowned “inflatablist” Luke Egan (aka Filthy Luker) returns to exhibit his bold, playful and clever inflatable art interventions throughout Surfers Paradise – a must see for locals and visitors alike.

Moving from the foreshore to the swimming pool, the festival will also feature a Mermaid School for the kids. An interactive swimming class and storytelling session will take place at QT Gold Coast’s very own tropical pool on Friday 10th and Friday 17th February from 3 – 5 pm.

All events at the 2017 Sand Safari Arts Festival are free to attend. So get ready to venture into the deep with Mermaids and Mythical Creatures this February.

Here’s a little taster from last year to get you in the mood 🌴
