Point Break: Gold Coast

Nov 4, 2016  ·  3 min read

By Ben Stephens

Summer is nipping at our heels, it’s so close you smell the sun-drenched beaches from here. You can even imagine the surf that will no doubt be pumping onto the Gold Coast. If you head south, down to Snapper Rocks (about a 30-minute drive from our front door), you’ll catch some of the best surf that the country has to offer. Not only will it be packed at this time of year, but you’ll find the likes of Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning and Steph Gilmore, just to name a few.

Now if you’re more of a kook than that of a professional, championship tour surfer, that’ll mean that you have the start of December free. You won’t be at the Volcom House in Hawaii, watching Pipeline and getting all messed up with the Da Hui boys. Why not spend that time learning to shred while the pros are out of town.

When it comes learning to surf on the Gold Coast, you have quite the selection. Here’s a little wrap up of our favourite wave-riding teachers along the coast:

Get Wet Surf School
Kerri and Andrew Jeykll, a husband and wife team set up a little surf school on the coast back in 2005. Ten years later and they’re now one the leading surf school out there. Taking students through all the theory behind building speed and performing a number of world class cutbacks. If the surf is non-existent or double overhead, the team have use of a wave pool, producing some quality waves. From group lessons to private one-on-one sessions, Get Wet Surf School will get you out there in time for summer, no floaties required. Check them out HERE

Gold Coast Surf Academy
Mad shredder, Johnny Preston is the proud owner of the GC Surf Academy. He’ll sort you out with a soft board and get you out the back of Surfers Paradise, where the view back towards the beach is almost enough. His team will make sure you have everything you need to catch a couple of waves and have you learning to shred pretty quickly. For lessons and prices, check them out HERE

Laying down the detail. I Like my job

Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre
This place is the mecca for surfing training – backed by the Australian Insitute of Fitness. Here you could go from an absolute kook to the world tour. To do that you’ll need to focus hard, dedicate your all and never give up. Oh, and pay for it. The coaches are all professionals and take training very seriously. If you want to skip the world tour and just learn to stand up and hold onto the wave, they can do that too. Check out all their deets HERE
