Open House 2017

For many, hearing that there’s a massive “open house” planned for the Gold Coast is a worrying thought. Visions of wild youths with Corey Worthington attitudes disturbing a quiet neighbourhood like an annoying Dothraki hoard spring to mind. Gold Coast Open House 2017 isn’t a party. Not that kind of party anyway.

Open House started in 1992 in London. The idea being to open the doors of attractive and architecturally significant buildings. To invite the general public in to get a behind the scenes gander at places they would usually only see from the street.

“’Open House’ is a simple but powerful concept: showcasing outstanding architecture for all to experience, completely for free” – Open House Worldwide

Since then the architectural free-for-all has spread to more than 30 cities around the world, including Melbourne, Tel Aviv, New York, Helsinki, Slovenia, Lisbon, Limerick, Milan, Prague and Santiago.

The Goldy entered the fray in 2015 and has received a glowing (and growing) response in its first two years. In 2017 Gold Coast Open House will swing open the doors of 40 nooks, pads, dwellings and digs around town. From the heritage listed to the odd shaped and the “I always wanted to go in there” type buildings, design variety is guaranteed.

We recommend…

  • Q1 – Boasting an elevator that ascends 77 floors in 43 seconds and the claim of being one of the world’s tallest residential towers, it’s hard not to be impressed by Q1
  • The Station – Built in 1922 this is the Gold Coast’s original ambulance station
  • The Ecovillage at Currumbin – Built in 2006, the Ecovillage is a multi award-winning clean and green community. It was a passion project looking at sustainable living started in the 90s by a group of friends

One for students, architects and design devotees, this is a great chance to get to know the city’s architecture inside and out.

Open House 2017 will take place November 4 in various locations around town. Tour bookings will open October 3.
