MEETING PLACE: THE ASIAN CENTURY

Gallery 1, August 17 to September 15, 2013

Organised by Australian Creative Exchange, this exhibition instigates a dialogue between artists from China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and Australia.

Spurred by former Australian PM Julia Gillard’s paper on The Asian Century which seeks to foster relationships with our Asian neighbours, and encouraged by the Gallery’s [Bundall] location which was both a meeting place and an historical Midden site for Indigenous people, who came together with visiting tribes to discuss politics and sharing the abundance of sea life the Gold Coast had to offer.

Participating Indigenous artist Madeline Hodge explained, ‘This is what this exhibition is all about, bringing people from everywhere together to share words, company and artworks, so as to gain a better understanding of each other and our cultures.’

A diverse program of cultural community events including a tea ceremony and artist’s workshops will complement the exhibition.
