The Golden Gold Coast Foodie Scene

The Gold Coast food scene is one that has evolved a lot in the last 10 years. Gone are the days of looking at the Goldy as just a Schoolies mess fest, metre maid haven and theme park town. The golden stretch now stands up food-wise to the better-known Aussie culinary sanctuaries, thanks to a bunch of eateries, cafes, bars and breweries about town.

We look at five of the best restaurants of the astonishingly good Gold Coast food scene.

Bonita Bonita

A big sister to BonBon bar and Pokè Pokè, Bonita Bonita is Morgan Walsh’s Mermaid Beach taqueria. With the expected plethora of burning candles and framed Santa Maria’s comes modern Mexican at its most experimental with a added tonne of audacious cocktails.

Try the Cerdo Taco – pork belly with quinoa, rocket, pineapple chilli jam, queso fresco and spiced rojo chimmichurri.

Yamagen

Vibing a traditional Japanese izakaya, Yamagen is boisterous, intoxicating and delicious. Go for the Sashimi Tacos with salmon and spicy tuna, yuzu avocado, warm sushi rice, seasame, watermelon radish and house spicy mayo, but stay for the dangerously morish cocktails and sake.

The Fish House

Looking out over Burleigh Beach, this specialty seafood eatery is a fine dining fish and chipper. With a strong reputation for fresh seafood and talented chefs, The Fish House throws daily catches into an exquisite menu with an exceptional wine list to match.

Try the simple, yet complexly delicious New Zealand Blue Cod grilled with olive oil, herbs and lemon.

The North Room

Their philosophy on food is to “eat with your eyes”. We’re guessing this is a shout out to how well they present their grub. The North Room is all about share plates and an ever-changing seasonal menu.

Try the oysters with smoked pork fat, rosemary and lemon or the deboned chicken wings with soured yoghurt, smoked yolk, sprouts, seeds and grains.

room81

With exemplary service, Two Hats and a knack for making minimal flavours pop, room81 is worth a visit. If you consider yourself a true foodie, go for the nine courses with matching wines, and savour the onion soup, and the pork and apple dish.
