Where can one sip the best coffee on the Gold Coast?
Cuppa Joe, brain juice, morning mud, mug of lightning, Java, roasted bean water. Call it what you may, coffee is an undeniably big part of Australian life. And over the years the Gold Coast has gained a lot of ground (‘cuse that) on the Melbourne and Sydney cafe scene.
The calibre of bean and barista has risen significantly in the last few years. And while there hasn’t yet been a champion crowned, there are more espresso slingers than you could throw a portafiltro at.
We look at where to get the best coffee on the Gold Coast.
No Name Lane | Broadbeach
NNL uses two different roasters. Black Sheep Coffee for the blend (milk based coffees), and 3rd Crack Coffee Brokerage for black coffees. Ahhh I see you know your roasters well! Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to coffee.
Paradox Roasters | Surfers Paradise
Bringing sustainably sourced coffee from a Brambati roaster to the coast. Not sure what the paradox is, but that doesn’t matter. Not when they make coffee good as they do.
FIXX | Surfers Paradise
The menu offers both organic and naughtier fare, but we’re not here to whet appetites. We’re here to wet whistles… with coffee. They pour Allpress Coffee, which is “designed for flavour”. But the go-to is the Bulletproof coffee – a creamy and brain activating brew made with butter.
Blackboard Coffee | Varsity Lakes
Hand-picked beans that are roasted at Burleigh Heads. A hit with locals, the Blackboard crew know how to treat a coffee drinker. They also do a wicked “hash bennie” (eggs Benedict on hash browns).
Stairwell Coffee | Surfer’s Paradise
Who doesn’t love a hole-in-the-wall cafe? A mini brew house that sticks it to the man. The man being your Starbucks and Glorias. Like a Harry Potter barista, Stairwell Coffee is tucked away under a set of stairs, but what they lack in space they make up for in flavour. They specialise in espresso, cold-brew and nitro coffee.
Base Espresso | Broadbeach
Healthy food and speciality coffee. That’s what Base Espresso punches out. Their star quarter back is Timothy Sweet, a Jedi-like barista so skilled in the grind, he has an Insty page dedicated to his technique.
