A skiers tale – of who will take the thrown for Storm of the Castle.
To be crowned a king is a story older than skiing itself and like any good story after a gruelling battle of blood, sweat, and tears, one takes home the kingdom of Falls and the best bragging rights. For an event that goes down in Falls Creek history, the jaw-dropping awe from audacious flow and technique over some of Falls Creek most obscure terrain features.
The masterminds of the course and are renowned for the burly big air park scene. This year the game literal steps up a notch with staircase like features, rails, pipes, jumps in a wonderful urban chaos.
Nick Payne is our local go-to for all things park and a contestant for this year’s event. Nick has travelled across the globe in search for the perfect park, and claimed a a few thrones upon the way. As Falls Creek his playground, Nick is the long standing champion of Storm the Castle and met with us to give us a low down of the event and some tips for the tricks that are tops.
How would you describe slope-style events?
Slopestyle is a course of rails, jumps and quater pipes, where freestyle skiers go and battle head to head on
What does storm the castle mean to the competitors of Falls Creek?
Storm the castle means a lot to falls creek. It’s one of the biggest events that we have here and to all the locals it means some time to show off what they have learnt through the season
How does the competition look this year, anyone we should keep our eyes on?
Kobe Bell is a snowboarding gun – a child prodigy and will absolutely give it his all on the day!
What is your go to move?
Go to move for skiing would be definitely double flip 1440
Do you have a freestyle skiing bucket list?
My bucket list is really just to keep on skiing for as long as possible and for the fun never to stop
What is the key to tweaking the world’s greatest grab?
You gotta have the confidence and insane flexibility, like a gymnast with no bones
