Unlikely spots for summer drinks

Who doesn’t love a good Friday night tipple or Sunday sesh? The weekends are basically an open invitation to get your drink on anytime in the space of 5 pm on Friday until well into Sunday afternoon but where to go?

Sure, the ol’ bar/pub/restaurant scenario is a winner and there are certainly many new places sprouting up around Canberra on an almost weekly basis at present.

For something totally different, our national attractions are mixing it up by offering unique experiences to whet the proverbial whistle.

Old Parliament House- Friday Night Drinks
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who rejoiced just a little upon hearing that the old institution of Friday Night drinks at OPH was back. Not just back, but revived, with new themes, DJs, amazing food, craft beers and lawn games. Kicking off every Friday at 4 pm, one of Australia’s most iconic venues provides a stunning backdrop to start the weekend right.

Bookplate’s Picnic Pop-up Bar
Drinks at a library? Not necessarily an idea you hear every day. At the National Library of Australia however, this can become your Friday night reality with Bookplate’s outdoor terrace becoming a pop-up bar from 4.30-8.30 pm. With great views over the lake, happy hour, bar snacks and live music, it is the definition of weeks-end bliss.

National Museum of Australia- Sundaze
If your Sundays are feeling a bit drab, head on down to the National Museum of Australia for their Sundaze sessions from 3pm-7pm. With drinks on the deck overlooking the lake and food truck The Roasted Bites providing Indian snacks, it is the perfect place to chill out to live music in the sunshine. While you’re there, check out David Attenborough’s Virtual Reality experience for a well-rounded end to the week.
