This Weekend in Canberra

words by annie brown

This weekend unofficially marks the end of ‘Coast season’ in the ‘Berra, with mixed emotions. Easter is done and dusted, the kids are heading back to school and the first frost of the season is known to flatten the gardens around ANZAC day.

The general reaction is to want to soak up as much sun and surf as we can before winter sets in, heading to beachy locales. For those who decide to opt in and take advantage of the beautiful autumnal days in the Capital, there is plenty to do this weekend. In fact, why would you want to be anywhere else!

Sunwaves: Indoor Street Fest
Can’t quite afford a trip to South America? Never fear, because Cuba is coming to Canberra! On Saturday night at the Old Bus Depot, you will find a Cuban fiesta with delicious food and drink, Caribbean beats, Classic cars and Cuban art. Local food trucks will be feeding the masses with South American fare and local breweries and wineries will be on hand to keep you satiated (there will also be mojitos!) The nights might be chilly, but this street fest will definitely warm you up.

Autumn Three Sixty Fashion Market
I love myself a bargain and having a background working in fashion, you might say I have an eye for one. I have always believed you don’t have to spend a lot of money to be stylish and some of my favourite pieces are either pre-loved, vintage or from Target! It’s what you do with it that counts.

So, when the Three Sixty Fashion Markets come around every few months, needless to say I am on it like a shot, and this weekend will be no exception. The niche market is dedicated to recycling vintage, retro, handmade and pre-loved fashion and supports ethical fashion choices and sustainability. Feel-good fashion at its finest, without the designer price tag. Head on down to Kingston Foreshore this Sunday for all the fashion action.

Style Masterclass with Sally Obermeder & Maha Koraiem
To prep for your shopping spree at the fashion market, you can get inspired in this style master class at the Canberra Centre. Sisters Sally Obermeder and Maha Koraiem started their fashion and lifestyle blog, SWIISH, offering tips on style, health and wellbeing and a gorgeous on-line boutique.

I was in a workshop with Sally once and I will attest that she is absolutely hilarious, down to earth and fun. You will know Sally from her career as a TV presenter (she’s currently co-hosting Channel 7’s The Daily Edition) and Maha is a certified health coach, so have a wealth of knowledge behind them on living a healthy and stylish life.

During the master class, Sally and Maha will break down the latest trends for winter, while making them applicable for any age.

Because it's mid-week and we know you could do with a giggle… #qtcanberra #qtstyle #qtlife
