Easter in the Capital

Call me naive, but I always thought that, come the Easter break, the whole city of Canberra made their way to the South Coast, you know, Bateman’s Bay and the like. See I thought that the last person out of the capital on Friday turned the fountain off and dimmed the lights, then the first person back on Monday had to get it all back on. Tough work.

After some deep research and double checking, it turns out that Canberra is an absolute hive of activity over the four day weekend. There is more happening here than Melbourne and Sydney put together.

Take, for example, Canberra’s Biggest Easter Egg Hunt. If you find yourself in an adventurous mood come Friday morning, make your way down to the Patrick White Lawns between 10.00am and 1.00pm. Not only the biggest hunt for Darrell Lea chocolate you have ever seen but also face painters, petting zoos and a giant jumping castle.

If that doesn’t get you excited then maybe you just want to gorge out on a half dozen loaf of hot cross buns. Hot Tip: grab the whole six, still intact. Slice them across the middle and toast each side. Cover with a nice coat of butter and boom, you just gave into eating the whole six in one sitting. As if you weren’t going to anyway. It’s Easter. They’ll be replaced with Christmas mince pies next week.

You could go to Byron Bay and check out the Blues Festival… Or you could stay in the ‘Berra and head along to the National Folk Festival; 200 artists, 5 days spread across 18 venues. The festival showcases local and international acts over a very diverse range of styles, from acoustic to Celtic, gipsy to the spoken word. More information HERE

Then again, you have four days off, maybe you should head to the south coast. Just think, all those howling southerly winds, the traffic and the time spent with family that you saw at Christmas.

Maybe it’s time you stayed in Canberra, keep the fountain running and lights turned on, there’s plenty for you to do.

If you need a couple more options to fill your weekend, head over HERE to see what our friends at Her Canberra are doing this weekend.
