As a city, Canberra is so much more than just our cultural institutions. That being said, they definitely are part of the pull – they’re pretty damn awesome. Winter is a good time to visit our galleries and museums, and not just because they’re warm. There are some top-notch exhibitions on at the moment. Here’s our pick of the ‘must-sees’.
Diane Arbus
Did you know that the National Gallery of Australia has one of the biggest Diane Arbus collections outside of the US? Now you do. The Gallery stocked up on a whopping 36 pieces during the early 1980s and they are now on display until 30 October.
Diane Arbus is famous for her polarizing photos that are both confronting and captivating. Some say her photos take advantage of the marginalised and disadvantaged, some say she empowered her subjects. Which side are you on? Only one way to find out.
Behind your eyes, between your ears
Now here’s an exhibition to get excited about. Digital media artist George Khut has recruited members of the public for digital portraits. What does that mean exactly?
Well, the subjects are hooked up to a machine which records their alpha brain waves and then creates electronic music based on the recording. This is done live in a public space at the National Portrait Gallery, so you can watch the process unfold.
