Vintage Threads in Bondi

Feb 9, 2017  ·  4 min read

words by alex robertson

For those of you who are a sucker for a good ol’ vintage band tee and froth on the smell of mothballs, then you will be all about the following words.

I have been a lover of op-shopping (as I used to called it) since about the age of 12 years old. Nothing excited me more than going down to my local op-shop for the $3 bag sale and filling that crumpled old plastic bag with cardigans, bags, clip-on earrings and belts.

As I grew older, I became more obsessed with the idea of wearing people’s old junk I discovered Crown Street, Surry Hills.

It was then op-shopping became vintage shopping.

Circa 2007 Crown Street was an absolute field day for vintage finds – some would say it still is, but back then there was double the amount of stores and everything was half the price it is today.

Now living in Bondi I have a whole new world to explore. That’s the amazing thing about vintage shopping, it’s never the same and you can go back every month and there is so much more to explore.

So where are the best places to be a nostalgic shopper in Bondi? Over the last 2 years I have found these to be the stores filled with the most vintage gold…

Bondi Markets
Bondi Markets has changed a lot over the years and sadly we are not blessed with as much vintage clothing as we once were but a couple of my favs still grace us with their presence. When you enter the markets, follow the path all the way to the end of the line you will find the vintage corner. The stand out is Bad Brains Vintage. It has some of the best vintage denim going around – The owner, Wade travels all the way to LA to hand pick the goods.

Vinnies Hall Street
This has to be one of my favourite Vinnies stores around. People say “when vintage shopping it’s all about luck”. I disagree. I don’t leave any stone unturned, to find the gold you have to search for it. Vinnies Bondi Beach makes this very easy. Everything is in perfect order of style, colour, length, occasion, gender and new stock comes in nearly every day.

General Pants
An unexpected contender – GP have been sporting the Storeroom Vintage rack for some time now and of course because its General Pants there is an additional $50 added to every price tag but when you find the perfect Levi’s light denim jacket that you will never throw out it’s definitely worth the extra $$$.

The People Vs.
Now as much as I am not usually a fan of vintage “inspired” fashion, Heath and his team at The People Vs. have nailed it. They have a mix of authentic vintage and their own take on vintage threads. They are one of the only brands that have pulled this off without making it look tacky and cheap. They even go as far as fake moth holes in their fabric – dedication!
