Surf’s Up @ The Pavilion

words by niall roeder

Bondi Pavilion is throwing a series of one-off surf culture events called Surf’s Up. And although they aren’t showing a screening of the best surf movie of all time, Point Break, they do have some pretty wicked things going on.

You might be a surfie from way back; the early might be a daily routine and you mightn’t bat an eyelash at the mention of Mr Zog’s Sex Wax. If so, Surf’s Up is for you. However, the surf-inspired film, theatre, stand-up comedy and art events aren’t solely for the waxheads.

We look at the stand out up events at Surf’s Up at the Pavilion.

Dad.Joke
Mark Swivel’s one man show is a rant and rave about parenting, politics and knocking about on Sydney’s Eastern Beaches as a grommet. This is a very frank and Aussie look at coastal life as we know it. There will be laughs.

Morning of the Earth
Morning of the Earth is a classic Aussie cult surf film. Albert Falzon’s 1971 salty masterpiece is internationally renowned for its cinematography and soundtrack. The flick portrays the harmonious relationship between surfers and nature, and the endless search for the perfect wave.

Storm Surfers 3D
Both extremely ballsy and extremely crazy, Big wave surfers are a different breed to most. Their eternal challenge and test of courage lies in – How big would you go? Storm Surfers follows Aussie tow-surfing legend Ross Clarke-Jones and two-time World Champion Tom Carroll; two mates chasing storms in an effort to ride deep sea monsters.

Shit Aussie surfers say. #froth #lifeofjack

There’ll also be a life drawing session complemented by Bondi Beach Radio DJs, a stage production directed by Stephen Abbott (aka The Sandman) and a Kosher Theatre Sports improv comedy show.
