Shelby’s Sidecar Tours

Jul 19, 2016  ·  2 min read

By Ben Stephens.

I’m not sure about you, but when it comes to checking out a new city, I like to do it in the most stylistic way possible. A red double decker bus with pre-recorded commentary is fine, you get to see all the sights, while sitting in traffic on an open top bus with 60 other tourists. That isn’t the worst way to see a city, but dig just a little deeper and the options for niche touring around the Eastern ‘burbs and the Greater Sydney area are huge. You can tour in luxury style or in an old school classic Australian Holden, maybe take a helicopter across the beaches to understand the layout… Or you could get to know the area from the comfort of a side car, attached to a sweet hog, driven by a knowledgeable local… Sounds sweet, right? Well the team at Shelby’s Sidecar Tours offer just that.

A quick back story on the company wouldn’t go a miss here. The company gets it name from Shelby Jackson, who at the age of 2 was diagnosed with autism. Shelby developed a love for motorbikes and could be found on the back of his Dad’s bike as they whizzed around the city with a huge smile. Years later Shelby was beginning to suffer from epilepsy and wasn’t able to join his Dad on the bike. A couple of years later, Shelby’s Dad found a sidecar motorbike dealer in Sydney, him and Shelby went for a quick blast and that smile was back on his face.

After seeing the happiness on his son’s face, the idea to start a touring company was born. Today you can head out with the driver/guides from Shelby’s anywhere from Manly, the City or the Eastern Beaches, they’re overly flexible with your choice of the route and the team will even set you up with a picnic basket stocked with the freshest meats, olives and baguettes they can find. So next time you want to go on an adventure, why not jump in the side car and take in the sights that Sydney has to offer.
