Breakfast at The Nine

Dec 16, 2016  ·  3 min read

words by james phillips

It’s no secret that Bondi is the place for brekky and being part of the ‘Smashed Avo Generation’, I’ve indulged at many of Bondi’s café’s for my morning meal. It’s no easy feat choosing from all the options and the standard is high in Bondi’s crowded brekky market but I’m going to tell you about one that ticks all the boxes when it comes to good food, good coffee and good atmos(phere).

The Nine is one of a unique spot around Bondi and since its opening in the summer of 2015, has become a brekky and brunch favourite for many of those that call the 2026 home. They are all about celebrating Mediterranean lifestyle by serving up delicious, locally sourced and sustainable produce in a uniquely elegant restaurant.

The restaurant itself is a treat for the eyes and for all the OCD neat freaks, this place will finally have you feeling a bit of Zen. With the timeless combo of blue and white serenading the walls, the wooden stools and tables sitting under funky Edison light bulbs. A beautifully organised open-kitchen decorated with jars of oats and granola, The Nine gorgeously demonstrates the beauty of simplicity.

Big glass window panels roll up to let the sunshine in and give you the perfect perch to observe all the weird and wonderful of Bondi’s neighbourhood from behind your latte or you can sit at the outside tables and get right amongst it yourself.

Everybody knows that the secret to breakfast success in Bondi hinges on your caffeine credibility – this is where The Nine takes the proverbial cake. They collaborate with Bondi’s own local micro roasters Coffee Bondi Beach  on Curlewis St to deliver amazingly fresh coffee beans and truly satisfy the coffee snobs of Bondi.

Now to me, nothing says breakfast like a Bacon & Egg Roll – it’s the cheap brekky staple and the ultimate crowd pleaser. I’ve tried about every B&E Roll that’s on offer in Bondi and The Nine’s take on this breakfast classic is unrivalled. I’ve never been under the illusion that it’s the healthy choice but these guys had me double guessing myself… with fresh tomato and shaved parmesan packed on top of all the usual goodies blanketed by a soft brioche bun, it is the freshest and most unique B&E Roll I’ve ever had the pleasure of scoffing down!
If you’re after something a little more sophisticated, the Mediterranean Baked Eggs are unbelievably tasty. If you’re going the grain, you won’t find much better than their Soaked Grain Bircher.

Insider Tip – The Nine has one of the best Bloody Marys in Bondi ?

And to save the best for last… from January 2017, The Nine will be opening for dinner Wednesday – Saturday and there’s no doubt that it will be a delightfully intriguing menu. Get down for one of your meals and you will not regret it.
