Bondi Fish & Chips

Sep 20, 2016  ·  3 min read

By Ben Stephens

As the days grow slightly longer and the sun begins to get a little warmer, both marginally noticeable at the moment, that yearning starts all over again. The craving for afternoons spent in Bondi, sitting on grassy knolls with good friends, post swim/surf and very much in the need of that late afternoon snack.

These little cravings, however, specific they may seem, are a reality of the impending summer season and shouldn’t be taken lightly, so let me indulge you in the art of tackling that attack of the snack. You find yourself at the beachside, so treat yourself, a kale juice isn’t going to cut it, in fact, it never will.

Stick with some of the fresh produce on offer, mix it with some ‘I’ll go for a run tomorrow’ internal conversation and get some local fish and chips into you – here are our picks to get wrapped up in:

Fishmongers
The team up on Hall Street, just a couple of blocks back from the sand, will have you eating some delicious cuts of fresh seafood in no time. Grilled or battered, that Hoki goes brilliantly when you team it up with some brown rice and a side action salad. Or just get your fingers into the Salt & Pepper Calamari, it’s pretty damn good.

Bondi Best
You can find the team from Bondi’s Best down at the Sydney Fish Market every morning collecting their catch from the floor and getting straight back to the kitchen. From either their North Bondi or Hall Street restaurant, you can dine in and enjoy the atheistic layouts or take that stuff back to the sand and enjoy the goods with a view. The line caught NZ Snapper tastes like it was caught with love and grilled by angles.

The Chip Shop
At the Chip Shop, you’ll feel like you’re back in Blighty with everything from the motherland on offer. Throw an order in for some Cod or Haddock, match that with a serving size of chips as you see fit. Then look to the sides menu and that’s where you fight with yourself to not order a deep fried Mars bar or that battered Jammy Wotsit.

North Bondi Fish
Arguably the best place to enjoy the freshest catch with the best views in town, North Bondi Fish is a staple in the Bondi environment. From share plates to crispy snapper and even the wine list, NBF doesn’t fail in delivering delicious and sustainable offerings that make you want to sit on the deck and order another wine.
