Art by the Beach

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” – Thomas Merton

While the natural beauty of Bondi and its surrounding beaches is enough to ogle over for the rest of your life, Sydney is bursting at the seams with top-notch art and much of it can be found in the galleries and walkways of our beachside home.

Sydney’s galleries range from the major institutions like the Art Gallery of NSW and the Museum of Contemporary Art that showcase the world’s most famous artists to privately owned galleries, outdoor displays and pop-up exhibitions that demonstrate the thriving scene of independent art in our city.

Whatever your taste, come and get lost in the world of art in the best galleries of Bondi Beach and you may end up walking away with a piece of your own …

Aquabumps

You cannot come to Bondi without a visit to the Aquabumps gallery on Curlewis St. It’s even rated higher than the beach itself as a tourist attraction on TripAdvisor! This iconic Bondi institution is the brainchild of Eugene ‘Uge’ Tan, a local photographer and surfer with an obsession for the Bondi Beach life.

Since the 90’s Uge has been documenting the everyday magnificence of the beach and the people that frequent it … whether it’s from the waves, the sand or up in the sky, Uge has captured the beauty of Bondi from all angles for ages. The gallery combines a love of the ocean, surfing and photography in an exquisite showroom with hundreds of artworks, most of which you can purchase on the spot.

Art Moment Gallery

The crew at Art Moment regularly put on a feast for the eyes and the senses with a tantalising array of original contemporary Sydney art with a touch of cultural diversity. Located on Curlewis St, the gallery presents work from a range of mediums with paintings, photography, sculpture, illustration, installation and mixed media projects all on display from both emerging and well-established artists and curators.

Cooee Art

On Lamrock Avenue, just a stone’s throw away from the water sits the gallery of Australia’s oldest Aboriginal art business. Established in 1981, Cooee Art has been the first point-of-call for fine Aboriginal and Indigenous art as they’ve held over 400 exhibitions across Australia and the world involving individual Aboriginal artists and community groups.

They’ve represented many of the movement’s most seminal artists and continue to exhibit and sell historically important and high-quality paintings, sculpture and limited edition fine art prints.

Bondi Beach Sea Wall

Along the promenade that borders the sand of Bondi Beach is the ever-evolving Bondi Beach Sea Wall. Since the 70s, the iconic outdoor gallery has featured a mix of street and contemporary art from some of the most renowned street artists, both local and worldwide.

The diverse and dynamic character of Bondi is epitomised by the fact that each panel is only allocated for 6 months before it is replaced by another imaginative mural. The only two murals to hold permanent residency are ‘The Girl with a Frangipani in Her Hair’, which is dedicated to Bondi local, Chloe Byron, who lost her life in the 2002 Bali bombing and the Anzac Commemorative Mural.

So come and get lost in the world of Bondi Art … who knows, you may even find yourself … or at least an original piece to put on the wall at home!
